The Effect of Poverty Status and Depression on Life Satisfaction of Older Adults with Disability: Focusing on Mediating Effects of Self-Esteem

The purpose of the current research is to analyze mediating effects of self-esteem on depression as well poverty status have effect on life satisfaction of older adults with disability. This study used 12th panel data of KoWePS (Korean Welfare Panel Study) and executed Path analysis with AMOS 20.0. Findings of this research are as followed. First, poverty status and depression of older adults with disability are found to have negative effect on self-esteem and life satisfaction. Second, we found not full but partial mediating effect of self-esteem between depression and life satisfaction as well as between poverty status and life satisfaction. Therefore our findings suggest that social welfare intervention to prevent depression as well as the strengthening the income security policy is needed for the older adults with disabilities. Also, it is necessary to develop various programs to help improve self-esteem lest the quality of life of poor or depressed older adults with disabilities should be deteriorated.
